The Commissioner for Information of Public Importance has been approached by an increasing number of journalists from several media outlets regarding the information about funding of the recent election campaign. Basically, they wanted to know the following: are the funding reports submitted by the parties to the Republic Election Commission (RIK) available prior to being published in the official Gazette?
The Commissioner for Information of Public Importance has talked today with the experts from the European Agency for Reconstruction about some specific problems regarding the protection of personal information. It was agreed that the passage of a new law, harmonised with European standards, followed by the establishment of an efficient mechanism of personal data protection should be some of the priorities of the new Government.
The Commissioner for Information of Public Importance Rodoljub Sabic believes that strict application of and the right attitude towards the relevant provisions on the Financing of Political Parties Act, the participants of the latest parliamentary elections could considerably contribute to the recognition of the freedom to access information as being a strong tool of democratic control and an efficient anti-corruption mechanism.
The Ratification of European Convention Act entered force exactly three years ago, on 3 January 2004. The Commissioner for Information of Public Importance believes that this date is a good opportunity to remind ourselves that by ratifying this document our country did not only declare its willingness to improve and protect human rights but it also undertook some concrete obligations.
