In the period between the 1^st and the 7^th of February 2011, the Commissioner for Information of Public Importance and Personal Data Protection, through the authorized personnel by the Commissioner – the Inspectors, performed the monitoring over the implementation of the Law on Personal Data Protection within fourteen institutions that are a part of the Government of the Republic of Serbia.

The monitoring was performed with regards to the obligation of the institutions to compile records of personal data databases in accordance with the Law, and submit the aforementioned records to the Commissioner in order for them to be entered into the Central Register.

The commissioner for the information of public importance and personal data protection, in the letter addressed to all Mayors and Presidents of the municipalities warned that the introduction of administrative taxes on the requests for free access to the information of public information would represent the illegal restriction of citizens on the exercise of this right.

The Commissioner asked the local authorities to refrain from making or adopting by-laws which envisage such fees, or, if they already adopted them, to repeal them immediately.

In this regard, the Commissioner Rodoljub Sabic said the following:

The Commissioner for Information of public importance and the protection of personal data estimates that the necessary change of the relationship of the authorities, first of all, the judicial authorities, to the obligations they in the conduct of  the Law on free access to the information of public importance and the protection of personal data.
Stressing that it is necessary to initiate and conduct more vigorously and more consistently than now, the civil or criminal proceedings against the officers and officials who do not respect the law, the Commissioner Rodoljub Sabic said the following:

The Commissioner for Information of Public Importance and Personal Data Protection believes that the news headlines in the printed media and the frequent statements by the citizens and the banks regarding the selling of citizens’ bank debts, at discounted prices, to collection agencies, shows that it is necessary for the state to devote much more attention to personal data protection.
