Privatization Agency violated secrecy of personal data

Belgrade - By publishing the list of citizens who did not exercise the entitlement to free shares, democratic standards of personal data protection were violated, Commissioner for Information of Public Importance Rodoljub Sabic said yesterday.

- Of course it is flagrant violation of all standards regarding personal data protection, democratic standards which are applicable in the whole world and of course violation of provisions of laws in our country - Mr. Sabic said to Beta Agency.

The Privatization Agency published on its web site, in daily paper “Politika” and in the Official Gazette the list of more than 33,000 citizens who did not exercise entitlement to free shares. Apart form the full names of citizens, names of one of their parents and unique personal identification numbers of citizens (JMBG) were published.

- I do not think that there is an evil intention behind the gesture of the Agency, but it is flagrant violation of human rights and it should be prevented by actions of competent authorities and education. As it is, this country must have both. It is data processing without persons' consent and use of data by which persons may be recognized, marked... - Mr. Sabic added.

- I cannot do anything from formal reasons - Mr. Sabic said and added that the Law on Personal Data Protection, which placed protection in his competence, would be implemented from 1 January.

Saying that Serbia has no mechanism for protection of citizens against unauthorized processing and use of data, Mr. Sabic urged all subject to restrain from that.
