COMMISSIONER
FOR INFORMATION OF PUBLIC IMPORTANCE AND PERSONAL DATA PROTECTION

Expired

The Commissioner for Information of Public Importance, in cooperation with the OSCE Mission to Serbia, has published the Guide to the Law on Access to Information of Public Importance in the Roma language. In this occasion, the Commissioner, Rodoljub Sabic said:

„This is probably the first time that any Law of the Republic of Serbia is being published in the Roma language. The publication is a result of a joint effort of the Commissioner for Information and the OSCE Mission to our country, in order to approximate the Law on Access to Information to as many citizens as possible. One of the best ways to do this is the possibility for citizens to get acquainted with the content of the Law and the comments of norms in their mother tongue.

Before this publication, we also published Guides to this Law in six minority languages that are according to the law in official use. Due to circumstances, the Roma language, even though the language of a numerous minority, is not in official use, but regardless of this, it was our opinion that it is necessary, good, and useful to publish the Guide in Roma.

Of course, it is known that representatives of the Roma community are inadmissibly frequently deprived of rights and objects which, from the existential point, of view appear to be more important than the right of access to information. Generally, the Roma community is living under dire, unsatisfactory conditions, and this must change. This is the obligation of state bodies. This is self-explanatory in view of the fact that this country has taken part in the international initiative „Decade of Roma“. However, regardless of this, measures should constantly be undertaken to reduce the possibility for any citizen to feel as a second order citizen. The publication of the Guide to the Law on Access to Information of Public Importance in Roma is a modest contribution that, under the objective circumstances, the Commissioner for Information is able to contribute to this end.“
