COMMISSIONER
FOR INFORMATION OF PUBLIC IMPORTANCE AND PERSONAL DATA PROTECTION

On the 25th of January 2013, the Commissioner for Information of Public Importance and Personal Data Protection spoke at the seminar for NGOs and the media "The Protection of Whistleblowers" held in Uzice.

In a fruitful discussion with the representatives of the media and the NGO sector, the Commissioner emphasized the need for engagement of all available resources of the state and the society as a whole when it comes to the fight against corruption.

In this regard, the Commissioner especially emphasized that the experiences of other countries show that the citizens who are ready to pinpoint corruption and other forms of irregularities in their surroundings can give a significant contribution to the fight against corruption. Luckily, there are people like that in our country as well. Unfortunately, it is a rule that they face quite uncomfortable consequences – from mobbing to disciplinary, misdemeanor and even criminal proceedings, to losing their jobs.

The Commissioner stressed that these individuals, the whistleblowers, should be provided full and adequate protection by law, and that he expects for the Law on Whistleblower Protection to be passed this year.

This event is one of many events organized in the cities of Serbia as a part of the "Whistleblower Protection" project implemented by the Commissioner with the help of the Embassy of the United Kingdom. One of the activities of the project is drafting a model law on whistleblower protection.
