COMMISSIONER
FOR INFORMATION OF PUBLIC IMPORTANCE AND PERSONAL DATA PROTECTION

01.12.2008.Commissioner for Information of Public Importance and Personal Data Protection, Rodoljub Sabic has received today Mrs. Natasa Pirc Musar, Commissioner for Information of the Republic of  Slovenia. Thus has officially started implementation of the project „Enhancing Personal Data Protection in Serbia" so-called Twinning Light, financed by the European .

In relation to that, the Commissioner, Rodoljub Sabic also stated the following:

„The Project we are initiating shall last in the next six months and shall cover numerous important activities, starting from the evaluation of harmonization of our regulations with the EU personal data protection standards, to strengthening the Commissioner's institution through education and training staff for performing supervision and enhancing data safety according to those standards.  During the Project duration, colleagues from Slovenia shall collaborate with my collaborators and shall transfer to them knowledge and experiences from practice in the field of personal data protection in their country and the EU.

I am glad to be in the position to cooperate on this Project with my Slovenian colleague.  The team she leads has confirmed itself not just in Slovenia, but also on the EU level, as the team of excellent experts. We have even earlier cooperated in a qualitative way, and this is a chance to enhance that cooperation.  The importance of that cooperation has been underlined by the fact that besides the Commissioner's efforts and the first results in this field, personal data protection in our country is still in the beginning phase. And this is an issue of extraordinary importance, for respecting constitutionally guaranteed human rights.  Besides that, it is an issue that would be the one of the first the EU shall ask Serbia, when the negotiations' beginning date is set.

In the realistic and difficult economic situation it is very important and good that the whole Project is financed from the Instrument of Pre-Acession Assistance (IPA) by the European .

We are sorry that due to the small number of Commisisoner's collaborators, which is a consequence of chronic lack of adequate work space, less staff than necessary shall pass the education process, than it could realistically be possible. However, I'm sure that besides that Project implementation shall give an important contribution to building of the institution necessary in each democratic society."
