COMMISSIONER
FOR INFORMATION OF PUBLIC IMPORTANCE AND PERSONAL DATA PROTECTION

03.12.2008.In response to the appeal of the Institute of Blood Transfusion of Serbia, the Commissioner for Information of Public Interest and Personal Data Protection and a large group of his associates have joined the campaign of voluntary blood donation. Stating that the state of blood reserves is worrying information of great public importance, the Commissioner, Rodoljub Sabic, called on all citizens who can respond to the appeal of the Institute to do so. In this regard, the Commissioner has stated the following:

"These days, the Blood Transfusion Institute of Serbia has, for many reasons, informed the public that blood reserves are very low and constantly decreasing.
The Institute currently has only a two-day reserve of blood and the number of units collected from voluntary blood donors per day is several times smaller than the daily requirement of Belgrade.
The lack of blood in storage results in delay of surgery, and sometimes even necessary surgery, and makes it difficult or impossible to provide care to many patients whose treatment requires blood. Simply put, the lack of blood can result in the death of some people even when the death could be prevented with the help of voluntary blood donors. I am glad I have had the opportunity to donate blood. I am even more satisfied because the majority of my associates responded to the appeal and donated blood and that we have thus at least minimally contributed to alleviating this disturbing situation.
I am also sure that there are many more people willing to be blood donors and thus give a significantly greater contribution to the blood donation campaign. I appeal to them to donate blood regardless to the fact that we are having the temperatures form hell, that it is the holiday season, school holidays and the like."
