Concerning the allegations that appeared in the media regarding the processing of personal data of citizens by debt collection agencies, the Commissioner informs the public that in the specific case in which he acted upon, he found that there is no legal basis for the processing of personal data by dept collection agencies, due to the fact that in that individual case the loan had already been paid, ie the receivable was not due.
On this occasion, the Commissioner points out that the processing of data by debt collection agencies is legal only if it is based on the law and the contract by which creditors entrust the recovery of outstanding debts to these agencies.
